The DTT team

Dirk van Dijl, Interim CEO
Dirk van Dijl One of two people with a Dutch name within DTT but this one actually speaks the language. Despite this handicap he also claims to be an American but came to the UK by accident (‘I made a stupid remark one day and here I am’ is his excuse) in 1990. Dirk loves the transport industry and has been involved in various parts of it since 1985, including rental, leasing, high technology, haulage, public transport and even green, responsible transport. The worrying thing is Dirk is always trying to change things – lets hope this is for the better.

David Keates, Operations Director
David Keates David’s claim to fame is that he’s been around the block and has seen it all before. Consequently he’s the one with no hair! However, his excuse is that ‘grass don’t grow on a busy street!’ He had many years in container shipping and then ports before starting his own business as a DTT Franchisee. More recently he has tried to put together his experiences of managing large organisations with his hands-on knowledge of what it takes to build a successful training business. Not very surprisingly David has concluded that everything depends on looking after your customers. Therefore, he is very strong on the idea that if we can delight our customers with great training by great instructors, the business will continue to flourish. This sets the ethos for Driver Training and Driver Supply.

Paul van der Hulks, Administration
Paul van der Hulks Paul joined DTT in 2003 and looks after the administration of the company, pay and rations. His driving is (fortunately) limited to steering a desk at Stanton. Paul is a keen reader, with far too many books at home (is this a home or a library?), an armchair fan of West Ham United and an amateur, although keen, genealogist, having traced his maternal family tree back some 500 years. Paul lives in rural Suffolk and is actively involved in several locally based organisations.

Alan Hayward, Training
Alan HaywardAlan was born a Moonraker, he joined the Army (Royal Corp of Transport) completing 22 years service. He left in 1993 and settled in Suffolk with his wife and two boys. Alan joined DTT, when it first came into being in 1999, as an instructor, mainly dealing in classroom courses but also as a driving instructor. His responsibility also covers keeping up to date with all the changes in regulations that may affect anyone in the industry. He is an avid reader, enjoys gardening and is fully committed to donating blood.

Yvonne Morrow, Customer Services
Yvonne Morrow Yvonne came down from Scotland last year to sunny Suffolk and started working for DTT in sales. She has a lovely daughter who decided to stay in Scotland, the phone is always busy at home and they see each other as often as they can. She has three cats to look after which keeps her on her toes: Blue, Tigger and Bandit. Yvonne’s favourite pastime is appreciating good food and fine wines.

Oliver Keates, Marketing
Oliver KeatesOliver Keates joined DTT in 2004, helping to run the Colchester office with his dad. He also has specific responsibility for the DTT website and marketing matters. He is a Crystal Palace supporter (somebody has to support them) which originates from his teenage years living in Dulwich, South London. Ollie enjoys watching films, listening to music and is a keen astronomer.

Investor relations

DTT plc (‘DTT‘ or ’the Company’) specialises in training and recruitment of drivers for the freight and passenger industries and its shares are quoted on PLUS. With owned and franchised locations in Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and the West Midlands, DTT is one of the largest vocational driver training institutions in the UK. It is the only one that truly combines training with recruitment, providing a one stop shop to both drivers and employers.

Driver Supply, a member of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (‘REC‘), offers driver recruitment services to both corporate clients and individuals.

The Directors expect DTT to benefit from improving market conditions within the driver training and recruitment industries within the short to medium term. The introduction into UK law of new European Regulations between 2008 and 2012 is set to increase the scope of mandatory training, both on an initial and an ongoing basis that all drivers of commercial vehicles registered in the UK will have to undertake. Latest figures from the Sector Skills Development Council suggest that there is a current shortage of approximately 15,000 LGV drivers in the UK, while the Directors believe that UK working time regulations are likely to continue to have a significant impact on this figure in the future.

DTT plc was incorporated on 7 November 2005 and its Ordinary Shares were admitted to trading on PLUS (then called Ofex) on 21 December 2005.

Directors and senior management

The directors
Anthony (Tony) Drury, Executive Chairman
Anthony Drury is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (FCIB) and a Member of the Securities Institute (MSI). He is the author of five financial books including ‘The St Helen’s Guide to the Ofex Market’ (now the PLUS market).

He founded St Helen’s Capital plc in 1998 and built it into the leading PLUS market corporate advisory firm acting for some of the most successful PLUS-quoted companies including Oakdene Homes plc (now listed on AIM), MyHome International plc (now listed on AIM), Ashpool Telecom plc and Espro Information Technologies Limited, the first Israeli company to join PLUS. In 2006 he led the £2.8 million fund-raising for Quercus Publishing plc.

He completed the Chairmanship of St Helen’s Capital plc in June 2006 and is now a director of two PLUS-quoted companies.

Dirk van Dijl, Interim CEO
Dirk has more than twenty years experience in the transport and telematics industries. He joined the board of DTT in October 2007 to drive the strategy of the company forward. Dirk has a strong record of developing companies forward including CityCarClub (www.citycarclub.co.uk) and ACIS (www.acis.uk.com), where he turned this struggling real time information supplier to the bus industry into the UK market leader and one of the major European suppliers.

Before ACIS, Dirk was managing director of the Willhire Group, a well-known vehicle rental company based in East Anglia. Dirk engineered a successful recovery of the company out of receivership, on behalf of its bankers Brown Shipley. Subsequently he organised a management buy-out and ultimately sold the company to Arriva plc.

Dirk’s previous experience includes both business and banking, having started his career on the graduate trainee programme of Bankers Trust in New York. He also worked for the French Indosuez Group and TIP Europe, the trailer rental and leasing group.

Dirk holds a BA in Economics and an MBA in Finance.

David Keates, Operations Director
David Keates, has a specific responsibility for the growth and development of the network of both Driver Training and Driver Supply centres.

After gaining an MA at the University of Oxford in 1976 David went through a graduate training program with British shipping company, Furness Withy. After experiences in the major container trade routes including inland transport he specialized in trades on the Americas. He grew to hold bottom line responsibility for Hamburg Sued’s Columbus Lines Interamerica Services, which he turned around from loss to healthy profit. In 1995 he moved on to become General Manager and a Director of Port of Felixstowe, the UKs largest container port. Latterly he was Managing Director of Port of Tyne Authority, before taking up the challenge presented by the extraordinary UK driver shortage and the lack of excellent training facilities. He started his own Driver Transport Training franchises, and grew healthy businesses which, became part of DTT plc. He now brings together a wealth of corporate experience and hands on training know-how that will be invaluable in growing DTT as we move closer to the implementation of the European Training Directive. Needless to say David has a unique insight into the Operational running of DTT.
